Liverpool Arts Prize

Artinliverpool.com founded the Liverpool Art Prize in early 2008, inspired by the Turner Prize coming to Liverpool in the Capital of Culture year. The Art Prize is now a firmly established part of Liverpool’s annual arts diary, acknowledging the outstanding achievements of local artists and their contribution to contemporary art. It aims to promote national awareness and discussion of contemporary art in the city and to support individual artists in developing their practice. Shortlisted artists are announced in January, exhibited in May, with the winner announced in June.

The Liverpool Art Prize has been awarding the city region’s most exciting and inspiring contemporary visual artists for the past seven years. The exhibition of the shortlisted artists compete for the £2000 cash prize announced at an Awards Ceremony in June. A partnership with The Bluecoat will invite the winning artist to present a solo show in their Vide space. The People’s Choice award of £1000 is selected by a public vote taken at the gallery.

In 2013 Tabitha Moses became the first artist to win both the People’s Choice and the overall prize in the same year. She will be presenting a solo exhibition of her work at the Walker Art Gallery during 2014.

Over the past seven years the judges have considered the work of thousands of artists, born or currently based in Liverpool City Region, who put forward their work following an open nomination process.

Jenny Porter, Metal’s Project Manager and curator of the Liverpool Art Prize, said:
‘The Liverpool Art Prize continues to celebrate the talent and creativity of the city and it’s always a pleasure to acknowledge the hard work of artists who may not always be known by people who live and work here. We’re really excited to present the Liverpool Arts Prize in the region.’
